Never judge a person's job til you've walked a mile in his/her shoes!
In most cases, a person who is rude or disrespectful to a salesperson or waitress etc, is because they have never done a single mile in their shoes.
Let's take a door to door sales person, for example... they come into a store, and the rude lady at the counter say's "I don't want it, I can't afford it, don't ever come back!" This is all before the sales person has a moment to even introduce himself. How does the rude lady at the counter know that she can't afford it, or doesn't want it, when she does not even know what "IT" is? Or what "IT" is all about. In most cases it only takes 3 - 15 minutes to describe. And if the rude lady would have just listened, it may have been someone that was going to help her in the future... like give her cash in her pocket when she was diagnosed with cancer, just 60 days later. And it was something that she could afford, but has now lost her house to foreclosure and car to a bank. And her husband is working 14 hour days to help pay deductibles instead of sitting at her bedside while she wilters away. If she would have taken 10 minutes to listen, she would not be in the horrible situation that she is in today.
So, here's to those who see a salesperson, how they can help change the world:
1. Listen, be courtious
2. If you really don't have time, schedule a different time/day
3. Once you have the information and knowledge to make a decision, then do so, the person will be on there way if they know it is not fit for you, and they may remember you when they need your services!
And remember this... they are not going door to door with a bag of shit, they actually have something worth while in their bag, something others needed, something others have said yes to, or they would not be doing it! So don't act as if it is an attack on you, they are your service person, here to help, here to satisfy, working hard, just like you. And if you cannot see this... walk a mile in his shoes, for a change, then you will understand.

Go be a salesperson for a month and then, come back and answer your question.
Just becase you are broke today:
1. doesn't mean you'll be broke tomorrow
2. doesn't mean you don't know someone who may need the "bag of shit, "blender", "hamburder w/cheese" "real estate", "car", "cancer insurance", fill in the blank..........

The only salespersons that have ever come to my door have been women selling home made tamales and the young 20 sumthins selling the magazine subscriptions.
If I had the money and could not afford the tamales, I would buy 2 dozen, then ask my friends for a loan until pay day.
The magazine guys ( I have been visited by 2) were okay with being turned down. They were traveling salesmen and told me all of the horror stories about their jobs- how much money they actually made. They really were happy to have someone to talk to. One came by when I had friends over. We gave him cigarettes and a soda and he colored with my daughter and just had fun hanging out.
The 2nd one came by on a cold morning and I was dead broke and had a cold. We were both depressed so we sat by the fire and smoked and I gave him several shots of Rum. He didn't make a sale but he had someone to talk to when he was lonely and he walked away rather tipsy.
