Get your yuppie ass dog park out of my drunken, crusty night life!!!
(This was supposed to be a v-bitch, but I can't find my damn webcam... I even went digging through the closet & I think I may have broken my finger... but still no damn webcam!)
Ok, boys & girls... show of hands... who's from Austin? Or maybe you're not from Austin, but you love Austin & you love the Austin bars & you especially like the dirty, grungy little watering holes in the Red River area... Yes??? Well, if that's the case, listen up...
TOMORROW (as in Saturday, May 31st) is the LAST DAY to let the city know what you think about the proposed "Waller Creek Project" & the fact that their glorified dog park cum tourist trap cum trendy shopping strip will destroy the heart & soul of the LIVE MUSIC CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!!!
Basically the City of Austin wants to tear down all of our favourite bars & live music venues - buildings which have been staples in this town for many, many years - & in their place create something akin to (or so they claim) San Antonio's River Walk. Now, while I enjoy playing tourist in SA & strolling the River Walk just like everyone else, I don't need a fucking River Walk in MY backyard & I certainly don't need it at the expense of the night life this town has been famous for for-fucking-ever!
Of course, we should have seen this coming, right? What with the new high rise apartments all over downtown... particularly the ones right next to Stubb's... & the constant bitching & whining about the noise coming from 6th street & surrounding areas. NEWS FLASH YUPPIE PIGS.... you decided to put your fucking condo smack in the middle of the bar district... ya know, where all those BANDS play their MUSIC in the middle of the NIGHT?!? I know, it was a quaint little notion at the time, right? But then you had to learn to live with the noise & the bums & the drunks & everything else that goes with it. See... there's a reason those of us who are actually FROM here don't fucking LIVE down there! We love it, we frequent it, we enjoy the hell out of it... but we also like to return to the quite & comfort of our homes at the end of a long hard night of debauchery. We know it's best to keep our home & our night life seperate... otherwise what the hell would be the fun in going out?
If this little proposal of theirs comes to fruition it will be just one huge kick in the crotch for those of us who have lived here our entire lives & have loved this town right down to it's rotten, drunken, loud, stinking core! Keep Austin weird? No... keep Austin ALIVE... don't sell out to all this West Coast high rise bullshit! (don't get me wrong west coasters... I lived out there for 4 years & loved it, but I didn't try to come in & change your landscape, did I?) Keep Austin REAL! Don't take the LIVE MUSIC out of the LIVE MUSIC CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!!!
Seriously people, if you haven't done so already... go fill out this retarded little survey & let your voice be heard. Think of it people... do you really want to live in (or visit) an Austin without the likes of the only true Live Music District left? Red Eyed Fly, Beerland, Elysium, Room 710, and Headhunters have been there for almost 7 years! And newer venues like Sidebar, Creekside Lounge, Red 7, Beauty Bar & Mohawk have been great additions to the area. Not to mention Emo's, Stubb's & Club DeVille... are we really going to just bulldoze Austin history like that? I fucking met Johnny Cash at Emo's!!! The place is like CHURCH, dammit!

Whole Foods is in the process of building their third high rise buiding within a 4 block radius of their original location on Lamar - abandoning each store along the way. Condos are being built sky - high on every street corner. Our streets are crowded enough, the traffic is already unmanageable and in go 500 Luxury Condos, with 15 or more being built within a two mile area downtown and south.
In recent years, Congress and Lamar have adopted the term SOCO AND SOLO as in other trendy cities. And thus all the coolest businesses went in to fill in the gaps and rent went sky high. Oh to be able to claim to live in 78704! But alas, soon even that zip will be no more... than high rise condos and every retail store.
Austin lost it's soul long ago, they're killing off the last of what I loved with this axe. You watch, regardless of what the citizens vote, the city council will rule in favor of "cleaning up the area" and demolition will begin. They've taken the smoke out of the clubs and the drink off the streets, the music off the rooftops and soon Austin will have no claim to fame. Live Music Capitol for Large Corporate events Only SXSW & ACL FEST !!! Keep Austin Weird Indeed
How about Make Austin Corporate and Unaffordable
Remember $3 shows and free nights at Emo's? How many nights we danced at Elysium and every name it claimed before that. That's OUR row they're threatening to kill!

YES! God, I cried when they bulldozed Liberty Lunch. We went downtown to the farmer's market yesterday & B kept asking me where to turn. Finally I looked at him & said, "I don't know. I don't recognize my own town anymore. Everything is fucking GONE!" Felt silly that I was about to cry over it all, but damn, this is my home & I'm not even comfortable here anymore. All of these jackasses claim they left the West Coast because they were tired of the over crowded urban sprawl, blah, blah, blah... but now they're doing just that to our city.
And ya know, B made a good point yesterday... this isn't really a touristy town, with the exception of SXSW. So when they tear out all these clubs & bars, just where will all the SXSW shows be held? That's a BIG money maker for the city. Wonder what they're planning there.

On a side note... the city has not taken down their survey from their website... not sure if this means they're still "listening" or they're just lazy. Either way... if you haven't already, I say keep on hassling them as long as it's up!

Hell yeah- keep hassling them!
"Keep Austin Weird." What happened to that trend? How about new shirts and bumper stickers that say "Keep Austin." ? Who can we get to do those ? Maybe the people that do "Defend South Austin." Those guys are worth talking to.
MandyStroyer, ya wanna hit them up?

I just might have to do that! Do you know who they are? I know there's a place over on 34th just off of Guadalupe, right behind the pawn shop. Hell, for that matter... maybe we can just print them up ourselves. You & I still need to get together on those other ideas we had awhile back. ;)
