Time to abandon ship- my company is sinking.
I haven't been exactly proud to say that I work for a Towing Company. Hey- it's been a means to pay bills and feed me and the kiddo and my brother was my supervisor.
Yeah- I have wracked up some bad Karma points. I monitored parking lots in down town Austin for local businesses and called in when someone parked and walked away. It's business. Protect the business owner so that his customers have a place to park. Or something. Thats what I have been telling myself. It's been a good in-between job while I look for a REAL job.
The company is sinking fast. In fact, I have been at home for 2 days. Why? My driver that picks up my cars has quit. There was no other driver assigned to me. The one other driver we could use is on vacation. One possible driver that usuallly drives a slide decided at the last minute to take off for 2 weeks.
My driver quit due to the fact that the company owner and the manager cannot promise that the trucks will be in decent enough shape to drive. There is nothing done to maintain these trucks. My driver had problems with his truck twice last week. Supposedly, it was fixed the 1st time. The back up truck had a belt break while he was trying to do a tow. Then one of the slider bars fell off and my driver was told that HE had to pay for it.
The drivers are payed by check. Everyone else is paid in cash. Our cash is always short and we sometimes have to wait 4 days for a measly shortage of 60 bucks.
How hard is it to run a Wrecker Service? Pretty hard for these guys.
Solution-
Hire a manager that actually knows something about trucks. Don't sit your ex-mistress that used to manage your bar behind the desk .
Get that driver supervisor to check out those trucks as they come in and go out. Have the drivers fill out a ck in/ck out form.
Arrange scheduled oil changes and tune-ups for these trucks.
Make sure to keep a well maintained back-up truck available at all times.
I myself was a driver supervisor for a Childrens Mental Health Organization. Did we have these problems? No.

You have laid it all out. I would vote for you to be the Supervisor. Somehow, though, I think something is just around the corner for you :+}
