Just a Little Biz Etiquette
I love my students. I really do.
I'm a univeristy-level instructor in a top-rated professional program on the West Coast and, as such, I often coordinate community groups who want to work with students. This summer, I'm doing just that. I'm supervising a team of interns who are working on a major community event that runs for 10 days. It's an incredibly high profile project - one that they will be able to put on their resumes and have it be a conversation starter and a foot in the door. In short, a great opportunity.
We're two days into the event and one of the interns sends me this email:
I won't be able to participate in the internship. Due to my own schedule and lack of computer my involvement in the internship won't be possible.
That information would've been helpful LAST WEEK. Seriously.
This sort of thing happens all the time. I know that they are young (18 - 21 on average) and the world revolves around their ever move and thought and whim. I simply wish they would exhibit some common-freaking-sense sometimes and have a little courtesy for those who now have to pick up the slack (like me).
If anyone is - or works with a - millennial (genY), and has some success strategies, let me know!
Pitches
Parents never made them responsible for anything! A simple call right when you know is all it takes... they are just afraid!! Were never taught to be professional. Yes, I have worked with them, I'm young, but very different. Raised by older parents. Very flakey, not responsible!
So here's what might help.
Be up front. Give them target questions. Give them an immediate out.
1. Do you have the tools to be successful? Do you have daily transportation and daily computer access?
2. What is your current schedule? What days and times are you available? How about extra-curricular activities? How often?
3. Do you have my number? If you change your mind about this internship, I need to know by tomorrow, so that I may fill your spot. Will you know your decision by tomorrow?
Sad...but true, to get anywhere with genY, you have to baby them like their momma's did... not true to all, of course, just some

No bueno.
Well maybe just for fun, you can call them in a week and act like you have amnesia and totally surprised that they no longer helping out.
Yeah, just keep acting like they're involved and keep asking hoow they're progress is. :}
