Companies Should Let Workers Telecommute
It makes me nuts that so few companies allow telecommuting. There are so many reasons TO allow it, at least for the many positions in this age that can be done from home. These are reasons that telecommuting benefit the employers, too! I won't even get into the many benefits to community, the environment and families.
Companies save money on the many expenses involved in having a person work in the office, not the least of which is real estate.
Companies get better productivity many times.
If they are all control freaked out about it, they can come up with plenty of standards to make sure someone isn't goofing off. And if they are, fire them just like you would any other employee goofing off.
Instead, companies are so concerned about watching over the shoulders of their employees, and so afraid of any sort of change, they force people (like moms and dads who might want to actually see their kids or something) to truck into an office, spend a fortune on gas, etc. just so they feel all warm and fuzzy.

I'll bet we'll see the % of people Telecommuting start to increase at an increasing rate starting like...ummmmm....now!

Video conference for 10-20 minutes every morning
Follow up end of day achievments
Follow up end of week objectives reached
Whatever, if people don't or can't produced, they are fired like any other J.O.B.

The problem is the companies really don't understand the benefit of decreasing overhead. There is still alot of the old school mentality that if you are not at your work station then you are not working and until some of the higher ups release that concept none of the thousands of amazing cloud computing technologies that are out their right now are going to get put to good use and companies will continue to over spend on unessecary facilities and expenses. Maybe the never ending upward spiral of gas costs and the bad economy will force these people to rethink their ideals.
Telecommuniting is the way of the future! If you can't get on board sooner or later your going to get left behind.
