Equality in the Kitchen.Another pitch about sharing resposibilities.

It is truly sad to see how many men still have the "a womans place is in the kichen" attitude. I would have thought that the man in my generation would have seen the light by now. Unfortunately, this is not true. And sadly, many women have this outlook on life as well.

This is 2008- not 1958. Women do not clean house while wearing dresses and pearls. Women have joined the work force.Shocking, I know.

I am sure that couples that are used to this...who have watched their parents and family happily live this way...are happy. But they don't know any better. I do.

Is this attitude brought on my family conditioning ? Is it a cultural thing? I wonder.

Im guessing its all in how you were raised, but ialso think it might have something to do with the money....Women that are used to alot of money coming from their husbands I think get more used to staying at home old fashion....

Well, it's kind of a toughy.  My wife was always cooking when we met.  I didn't ask her to cook, she just did it and I loved it.  When asked, she reply's that she loves to cook.  So, my *expectations* are that she will cook, not becuase of gender or anything elsel but, becuase her actions thus far have indicated that this is a role she has taken on and enjoys.  Of course, I cook sometimes and definitely clean all of the time.

On the flip side, she hasn't taken out the trash once in nine years.  She feels like it is the man's responsibility to take out the trash.  I was pretty much trained this same way by my mother and so, I always (sometimes three times a day) take out the trash.

I think the point is to have these conversations.  Hey, do you expect me to cook all the time? why? Do you expect me to take out the trash all of the time? why? How can we best work together so, we'll help each other out and not annoy each other..

Sounds like we all agree that part of this is in due to how we were raised. My boyfriend takes out the trash as his dad and my dad did.

Like Aronados wife, I have things that I like to do so I just do them and I do not ask for help. I have always enjoyed working in the yard. As a renter, I do have lawn guys , but they don't trim the hedges, pull weeds out of the gardens, trim these little scrappy trees. I do that stuff and I like it.

Having conversations is a good idea. Finding out what we don't mind doing. and yes- WHY do you expect me to do this or that. Making trades even. "You scrub the toilet and I'll scrub the stove."
