The 2-Party System sucks...
I am a Republican who feels like my Party abandoned me a long time ago. Instead of fiscal prudence and small government ideals, my Party has been hijacked by religious fanatics and rednecks who have turned the GOP into a dried up shell of what it once was.
John McCain (who I supported in 2000 until the GOP Attack Machine took him down) USED to be a man of true Republican principles, but now it appears as though he has been assimilated into the very machinery that once chewed him up and spit him out in favor of W - who is truly among the worst leaders our nation has ever had.
The depressing part is that the Democrats are really no better, and Barack Obama is really not a candidate who I could support this year. I think he is an amazing orator and an inspiring person, but I can't get beyond some of his associations. Also the lack of a substantive voting record to weigh against his rhetoric doesn't make me feel comfortable that he is willing to do what needs to be done for the country. (He seems to have a voting record that reflects politically safe moves, IMHO). I feel like his star rose far too quickly, and that he really is not ready to lead the country. Maybe in 4 years I would feel differently, but I just don't think he's the man for the job this time.
The only candidates whose ideology is even close to my own will never have a chance in this election... and that is the problem - once again we are stuck with having to choose who will be the lesser of 2 evils. :(
Pitches
Interesting. I feel that Barack is a man that is easy to like and trust. I understand what you mean about *associations* but, hell, who in politics hasn't *associated* with some unsavory folks? (nobody) The reality is, we have two choices, which is the lessor of the two evils?
I want some new blood & ideology. Debates will hopefully clear some things up for us.

I agree that "new blood" is desirable, but therein lies the dilemma; the only "new blood" we have to choose from is on the major party ticket of your choice (either seriously troubling inexperience with Obama at the TOP of the ticket, or totally pandering-to-the-base cluelessness in the #2 slot with Palin). The REAL alternatives this year (as as the case EVERY year) will be buried by the mainstream media and their candidacies will be fought by the major parties to keep them off the ballots in many states. It's corrupt and immoral.
So "We the People" get screwed into having to choose between (1) a skilled politician who was able to get substantial backing from a party so desperate to retake the White House that they rushed him into the spotlight before he really had any chance to develop a record, and on the other side (2) a skilled politician who actually used to represent the values of true conservatives, but whose platform and public remarks have been scripted to appeal to the Religious Right because "that's the base." It's really depressing.
Don't get your hopes up about the debates being any help... if you watched the first one you saw 2 men who rarely deviated from their stump-speech sound bites. It was a total waste of 90 minutes of a Friday night for me. I could have been out drinkingfor crying out loud... GRRR!

Totally agree on the 1st debate, absolutely nothing new whatsoever. I totally feel you on "corrunpt and immoral." Palin (IMHO) was chosen soley to snatch up Hilary votes. This is pretty much a freaking joke but, hell, we gotta choose someone.
LOL I am with you 100% on the out drinking part.
